Semana Santa Quito / Easter 1

Easter in other in Ecuador we celebrate Good Friday (Viernes Santo), a Catholic event remembering the day of the crucifixion of Jesus. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Season of Lent (Cuaresma), and Viernes Santo a time in Quito when catholic devots perform an elaborate celebration of Passion of Christ in a long and crowded procession within historic center streets.

There are hundres of people marching in the procession called Jesus del Gran Poder, some wear purple robes and cone-shaped hoods called “Cucuruchos”; “Cucuruchos” symbolize penitents who are in repenting.

Other devots march barefoot, flagellate themselves, use barbed wire crowns, catuses, carry giant heavy wood crosses, feet chained, all this in a voluntary penase.

The procession last around 5-6  hours, the beggining and the end of this event is at Plaza San Francisco, however devots, tourists, street vendors  stand along the route.
